PRIs & STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS

How We Invest

Every investment serves a purpose for the Otto Bremer Trust. Often these investments go beyond our grantmaking, including program-related investments and strategic investments, all in keeping with our mission.

Program-related investments

We use program-related investments to provide capital to qualified organizations. These organizations—with demonstrated capabilities in areas consistent with OBT and capable of entering appropriately documented financial transactions—work with us to further social impact and financial objectives. Financial returns on our investments contribute to our resource base and are reinvested to support our mission.

PRIs are administered by our subsidiary, Community Benefit Financial Company (CBFC). They can include financing methods commonly associated with banks or other private investors, such as loans, loan guarantees, and even equity investments in nonprofit organizations or commercial ventures for charitable purposes.

Strategic investments

While all our investments are strategic, opportunities can arise that do not fit within our responsive grantmaking or program-related investment categories. These strategic investments—whether unique projects, complex financial undertakings, or initiatives that bring focus to a regional issue—are considered because they also meet our objective of investing in people, places, and opportunities. While they may undergo independent consideration, they must still fulfill all OBT’s requirements.
